Update on Pro Bono Legal Services

Over the past year, demand for PooranLaw’s free legal services has grown rapidly and we could not be more pleased.  This month, we are celebrating a milestone with our program throughout Windsor-Essex and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA): our team has handled over 100 pro bono legal matters!

Our free legal services program is built on a rights-based model of legal advocacy.  Since launching this program in the summer of 2019, we have been working with people with intellectual disabilities to promote self-directed decisions and planning.  For example, we have helped our clients to end guardianship orders, to create their own Powers of Attorney and Wills, and to address and remedy abuse in various forms, including financial, sexual, and physical abuse.

It has been an incredible year assisting people to assert their decision-making rights and to access important systems and supports.  Once again, we want to thank People First of Ontario for their ongoing support in helping us to deliver these free services.  We look forward to building on this work in 2021!
