PooranLaw brings together specialized legal expertise in all aspects of the law that impact the disability, developmental services and care sectors. Our impact continues to grow and this year we were privileged to undertake the following advocacy initiatives:
-
-
- Successfully advocated for access to full disability benefits under the ODSP for people with disabilities who were denied access based on the nature of their particular disabilities.
- Successfully defended people with developmental disabilities against criminal charges based on principals of human rights.
- Successfully intervened before the Ontario Court of Appeal in relation to deemed competency and equal protection of decision-making rights for people with developmental disabilities under family law.
- Supported the development of Canadian accessibility standards in several sectors, including accessible travel, communication supports in the courts system and program and service delivery for federally regulated entities.
- Contributed to submissions to the United Nations in relation to Canada’s compliance with the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
- Made recommendations on how financial institutions can create policies that would encourage more accessible banking for people with intellectual disabilities.
- Presented in Barcelona, Spain at the International Academy of Law and Mental Health to promote the need for a federal supported decision-making statute that would apply across Canada.
- Advocated to remove lingering barriers when it comes to opening and managing Registered Disability Savings Plans.

We look forward to continuing to be a voice for positive change for people with disabilities and the developmental services sector in 2025!
