Interested in learning more about social enterprise? Here’s an overview.
What is a social enterprise?
The term Social Enterprise typically refers to business ventures operated by not-for-profit entities, which could include co-operatives and charities. These businesses sell goods or provide services in the market for the purpose of creating a blended return on investment, both financial and social. Their profits are returned to the business or to a social purpose, rather than maximizing profits to shareholders.
Why Social Enterprise?
Many organizations are interested in developing social enterprises as a way to develop additional revenue streams which can then directly fulfill a social purpose. This may include establishing a for-profit business in which the not-for-profit becomes an investor or supporting a group of people, some of whom may be living with a disability, to establish their own business.
