PooranLaw is a law firm focused on social justice. They help people with disabilities and other marginalized groups. Their goal is to improve the lives of people with disabilities, support the organizations they work with, and drive meaningful change.

What if I don’t know who to report to?
If you are unsure who to report an incident to, you can make a report to either Special Olympics Ontario or to the Independent Third Party. Your report will be reviewed and, if needed, the report will be transferred to the appropriate party. What matters most is that the report is made – Special Olympics Ontario and the Independent Third Party can handle the rest.
Who can make a report?
Anyone. Anyone who has been a victim of maltreatment, has witnessed a maltreatment, or has become aware of a maltreatment. Maltreament is when someone has been treated badly or unfairly, and that has caused them harm.
Who can I make a report about?
You may make a report against any players, athletes, coaches, officials, team managers, administrators, instructors, employees, committee members, board members, volunteers, parents, guardians, vendors, or contractors who do something that can result, or has resulted, in harm.
When should I make a report?
You have to make a report within 14 calendar days of an incident.
If an incident took place more than 14 calendar days ago, please submit your report anyway because the Independent Third Party can decide to accept the late report.
What happens once I submit the report?
The Independent Third Party review the report to decide whether it is a matter that falls under its jurisdiction. If the report does not have enough information for the Independent Third Party to decide, they will contact you (or other individuals) to get more information.
If the incident is something that the Independent Third Party handles, then they will start their investigation, give you advice, or do anything else that is required to deal with the incident appropriately. They can, for example, interview different people, facilitate a dispute resolution process, or report the issue to the appropriate authorities, as needed.
If the incident is not something that the Independent Third Party handles, then they will refer the report to Special Olympics Ontario to resolve.
The Independent Third Party will give you an update on the report, if they can, unless you choose to submit your report anonymously.
