Calvin To is a lawyer at PooranLaw who provides a variety of legal services to non-profit clients, including in the areas of labour and employment law, human rights law, and contract law. He has advised clients on a number of cutting edge issues, such as regulating the use of artificial intelligence in the workplace and initiatives to combat Indigenous identity fraud.
Prior to joining PooranLaw, Calvin articled and summered at the Ontario government, where he provided litigation support in a range of practice areas.
Calvin came to the legal profession with a previous career as a broadcast journalist. Over his seven year career, he worked as a reporter and anchor for Canadian news networks across the country, reporting on everything from elections, to natural disasters, to criminal trials, and more. As a former journalist, he is conscious of issues that may affect a client’s reputation and provides advice with a public relations framework in mind.
Calvin is a socially minded lawyer who conducts his work with an equitable and inclusive lens. He is the host of a podcast entitled Voices of the Pandemic, which documents the rise of anti-Asian racism in Canada during the COVID-19 pandemic, and has also conducted training sessions on anti-Asian racism for groups of professionals.
In his spare time, he enjoys trying new cuisines, getting trapped in escape rooms, and losing to his wife at board games.
